What are the top things to do in Oman?
by Visagov | July 23, 2019Oman is probably not one of the most popular destinations, but perhaps this makes it an even more surprising place. The Sultanate of Oman is located south of the Arabian Peninsula, and in 2017 it was selected as one of the best countries to visit by the Lonely Planet magazine.
Undoubtedly, Oman will welcome you with its numerous attractions and the hospitality of its people. Discover below some of the things you cannot miss:
Capital Muscat
The capital Muscat is a good starting point to start your trip. Located on the shores of the Gulf of Oman, some of its corners will make you feel in a story of the Arabian Nights. You will feel like being in a dream when walking through the alleys of Mutrah, the old town. Losing yourself among the streets painted in white is a reason enough to visit the area.
In addition, here you can also discover the Corniche or promenade, which highlights a beautiful blue mosque facing the sea, and admire the Dhow with traditional boats used for transport.
The souk of Muscat invites you to immerse yourself in its perfumes and colours. At sunset, the covered souk is full of life with its stalls of traditional clothes, handicrafts and other objects which are always perfumed with incense. Another visit that you can not miss is the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, the only one that allows non-Muslims to enter. It is an impressive place of great beauty and elegance.
City of Nizwa
One of the most visited places in Oman is the beautiful city of Nizwa, named cultural capital of the Islamic world. Strolling through its ochre-coloured streets is like a dream.
Among its most well-known monuments are the Nizwa Fort, the largest fortress in the country. Nearby is the impressive mountain of Jebel Shams, the highest in the country, where the most athletic people can enjoy activities such as trekking.
The landscape is so impressive that it is known as the Grand Canyon of Arabia. Another natural wonder that you cannot miss is the Sink Hole, a large pool full of water suitable for swimming that is located somewhere between Muscat and the city of Sur. It is believed that it was created due to an impact of a meteorite.
Another place nearby to enjoy a refreshing swim is Wadi Shab, an oasis dotted with natural pools.
Sur City
Three hours from the capital you can visit Sur, a city famous for its shipyards full of history, since the traditional Dhows are still handmade here. In fact, it is known as the city of Sinbad the Sailor. Do not leave without taking a stroll along the Corniche or without visiting the shipyards.
Village of Al Ayjah
Next to Sur, is the picturesque village of Al Ayjah, a small corner full of traditional white houses and whose lighthouse is one of the great emblems of the town.
And of course, to enjoy the most authentic desert of Oman, do not miss Wahiba Sands, an area where the dunes are especially spectacular.
