Are you planning a trip to Indonesia? That’s a fantastic choice! This country, comprising more than 17.000 islands in Southeast Asia, is as close to paradise as you can get. Travelers from all over the world flock to Indonesia to enjoy stunning natural landscapes they’re not likely to find anywhere else.
However, before the enjoyment comes the paperwork. Here’s all the important information about how to get a visa for Indonesia and how to get a visa for Bali.
Do I need a visa for Indonesia?
It depends. If your nationality is eligible, you need to know how to get a visa for Indonesia.
You can apply for an Indonesian travel visa online through Visagov. There are currently two options available:
- e-VOA
- e-VOA (Bali)
The difference between these two is that the document “e-VOA (Bali)” includes the processing of the mandatory tourist levy.
If your nationality isn’t eligible, then you’ll need to apply in person at the corresponding embassy or consulate.
Do I need to know how to get a visa for Bali?
Yes: if your nationality is eligible, you’ll need to know how to get a visa for Bali. It’s the same one you’ll use for visiting all of Indonesia: the e-VOA.
However, besides the visa, you’ll need an additional document to be granted access into the province of Bali: the mandatory tourist tax. Once you arrive in Bali, you’ll be asked to provide a QR code included in the payment confirmation for the tax.
Luckily, you can process the tax along with your visa: just select the option “eVOA Bali” and you’ll have everything you need for your trip at the same time. If your itinerary doesn’t feature Bali, you’ll simply need to apply for the e-VOA.
Visa types available for Indonesia
e-VOA
One of the visa types available on Visagov is the e-VOA for Indonesia. You’ll need to apply for this document under the following circumstances:
- Tourism
- Visits to friends or family members
- Conferences, exhibitions, conventions, etc.
- Transit
- Business
- Medical treatment
- Governmental visits
- Yacht trips
The e-VOA is valid for 90 days after approval. However, you’re only allowed to stay in Indonesia for 30 days.
Bali tourist levy
The government of Indonesia decided in 2024 to set up a mandatory tourist tax for foreigners looking to visit Bali. This measure has the goal of attempting to curb mass tourism to preserve this extremely popular and beautiful destination.
This tax can be paid at the airport or online thanks to Visagov. The latter is the better option: it’s a very quick process and it allows you to travel with the comfort of knowing you have all you need to enjoy your trip.
To pay for the tourist tax on our website, you need to select the option “e-VOA (Bali)”. This visa type will grant you the e-VOA for Indonesia and the Bali tourist levy. We’ll send you payment confirmation for the tourist tax, with a QR code in it that you’ll need to present to the border authorities upon arrival in Bali.
This document is valid for 60 days after its approval, and you can only use it once. If you leave the province of Bali and wish to reenter, you’ll need to pay for the tax all over again.
What are the Indonesia visa requirements?
These are the requirements to apply for the e-VOA for Indonesia and Bali:
- Passport with 6 months of validity remaining by the date of entry
- Recent personal photograph
- Booking for the departure trip from Indonesia. It must show the date of the trip.
- Bank card to pay for all the fees
- Email address to receive all the documentation and notifications
How to get a visa for Indonesia: step-by-step guide
Visagov has simplified and optimized the application process for the comfort of travelers. If you apply for the e-VOA on our website, you just need to follow these simple steps:
- Fill out the application form. Make sure you don’t leave out any field and that all the information is accurate.
- Upload the necessary documentation
- Pay for the attached fees with your bank card
- And that’s it! All that’s left to do is wait. You’ll receive the resolution of your application in the email address you provided.
Which nationalities need to know how to get a visa for Indonesia?
Almost all nationalities are eligible for the e-VOA. If you’d like to make sure that’s the case for you, use our eligibility verifier.
Visa exempt nationalities for stays of up to 30 days
ASEAN member countries: Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste and Vietnam. If a passport holder from one of these countries travels to Indonesia for 30 days or less, they won’t need to apply for a visa.
Nationalities in need of approval from the Indonesian Immigration Office
These nationalities require authorization from the government of Indonesia to travel for tourism, business and visits: Afghanistan, Cameroon, Guinea, Israel, Liberia, Niger, Nigeria, North Korea, Pakistan and Somalia. They aren’t eligible for the e-VOA and will need to visit the corresponding embassy or consulate to apply for a visa.
Can I make changes to my application?
No, you won’t be able to modify your application once it’s sent. If you’ve made a mistake or would like to change part of the application, you’ll need to submit a new form.
In order to avoid this issue, always check every field of the application form. Make sure the information is true and correct.
How much does the visa for Indonesia cost?
The e-VOA for Indonesia has a cost of 519.000 IDR (30 EUR/32 USD approximately).
The e-VOA for Bali, on the other hand, costs 673.000 IDR (38 EUR/41 USD approximately). Since it includes the Bali tourist tax as well as the visa, its price is a little bit higher.
How far in advance do I need to apply?
You should send in your application at least 3 days before starting your trip.
If you can start the process earlier, even better! However, you should take this into account:
- Your e-VOA will be valid for 90 days after approval
- The Bali tourist tax confirmation is valid for 60 days
This means that you won’t get your approval before these dates, even if you apply earlier. We make sure your application is processed at the right time so you’ll be covered during your trip.
