Yes, Australian passport holders need to have an approved India visa to be granted entry to the country, no matter the reason for the trip.
How can Australian citizens apply for an Indian visa?

Can Australian citizens apply for every kind of India visa online?
Even though India has several different kinds of visas available, only a few can be applied for online:
- 30-Day tourist visa: it allows a stay of 30 days in India with double entry.
- 1-Year tourist visa: it’s valid up to 1 year and it allows for multiple entries.
- 5-years tourist visa: it’s valid for five years since it’s issued and it allows for multiple entries. However, each stay has to be for less than 90 days. Exceptions: USA, UK, Canada and Japan, who can stay for 180 days instead of 90.
- Business visa: it’s valid for one year and it allows for multiple entries, although each stay has to be for less than 180 days.
- Medical eVisa: it allows for three entries and exits maximum. It has 60-day validity.
- Medical Attendant eVisa: it's a triple entry visa (you can enter and leave the country up to three times). It has a 60-day validity.
- Conference eVisa: it's a single entry visa with 30-day validity.
How much does the India visa cost for Australian citizens?
The cost depends on the visa you choose:
- 30-Day tourist visa: 0-24 EUR (0-39 AUD)
- 1-Year tourist visa: 0-39 EUR (0-64 AUD)
- 5-years tourist visa: 0-77 EUR (0-125 AUD)
- Business visa: 49-96 EUR (80-156 AUD)
- Medical eVisa: 0-96 EUR (0-156 AUD)

What are the India visa requirements for Australian citizens?
Australian citizens have to meet the following requirements to travel to India:
- Having a valid Australian passport. It has to have two blank pages and a validity of at least 6 months from the start of the trip. It’s important that the passport is in good condition or it may cause you to be rejected from entering India.
- A recent passport-style photograph of the applicant on a white background. Make sure to take your picture without any sunglasses, scarves, necklaces or any garment that could make your identification difficult.
In some cases, the following could be required of you:
- A copy of the entry/exit flights.
- Proof of funds for your stay.
What are the allowed entry points to India with an online visa?
Australian citizens travel to India with an online visa can do so from any of these entry points:
- Airports: Ahmedabad, Amritsar, Bagdogra, Bengaluru, Calicut, Chennai, Chandigarh, Cochin, Coimbatore, Delhi, Gaya, Goa, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Madurai, Mangalore, Mumbai, Nagpur, Pune, Tiruchirapalli, Trivandrum, Varanasi, Visakhapatnam
- Seaports: Chennai, Cochin, Goa, Mangalore, Mumbai. When traveling to India by cruise, Australian citizens can only enter the country through the ports of Cochin, Goa and Mangalore.
You can exit the country through any authorized checkpoint.
How long does it take to get an India visa for Australian citizens?
All types of India visa have to be used within 30 days of issue. The safest thing would be to apply 15 days before traveling or a few days sooner.
You won’t receive your approval until there’s only 20-25 days left for your trip to India.

What is the time difference between India and Australia?
