In “Museo del Oro” or Gold Museum you will learn about the indigenous culture by seeing more than 34 thousand beautiful pieces of gold of that period. You can also see the Colombian National Museum, which is the first one of the country and one of the oldest in America. It offers a variety of art pieces as well as archeological and historical exhibitions.

There you will encounter astonishing views of the city. Be sure to check the best time to visit Colombia, so that you have the best weather on the hike.

You can’t miss La Chorrera Waterfall, Colombia’s largest waterfall. It is an hour away from Bogota and there you have a 2–3-hour trek. We are certain that you will be amazed by the views.

Another place we recommend is the Cloud Forest of Chicaque, about 45 minutes away from Bogota. You will have amazing views and a hike you will remember. There are guides that offer tours so that you have a great experience.

Walk through the historic neighborhood La Candelaria

La Candelaria is Bogota’s historical neighborhood, it combines architecture, history, gastronomy and culture. It is definitely one of the best things to do in Colombia if you are visiting the capital city.

While you walk around the streets of La Candelaria you will find the Plaza de Bolívar, the main square of the city. Around it, there are the main buildings like the Palace of Justice, the cathedral and the Capitol.

You definitely can’t miss la Plazoleta el Chorro de Quevedo, site of many legends regarding the founding of Bogota. It is known that the location was also very valuable for the community even before the colonization.

Try Colombian food

Another thing you must do in Bogota Colombia is try the local food. We are certain you will enjoy the characteristic flavors and spices. Be sure to enjoy arepas, a common street food filled with cheese or meat and eggs.

Bandeja Paisa

You also need to try the Bandeja Paisa, a very complete breakfast with white rice, red beans, chicharrón (pork), fried egg, arepa, a slice of avocado, chorizo and plantain. It will for sure keep you full for a long time.

Do fun activities

Apart from the food, history, art and culture that Bogota has to offer, you can also have a lot of fun with different activities. For example, did you know the game of Tejo is Colombia’s national sport? It was actually played by the indigenous people. It consists of taking turns to throw a heavy steel disk at a boar about 18 meters away. The aim is to land the disk, or Tejo, at the center of the ring. You can find bars in the city where you can play it.

Another thing you must do is go to the salsa clubs. Colombians love to dance, and you will most certainly find someone to teach you and who is more than happy to dance with you.

Plazoleta El Chorro de Quevedo

We recommend the Ciclovia as well, which is open every Sunday and on festive dates between 7am and 2pm. It is the biggest lineal park in the world, and it connects every part of the city. You won’t regret seeing the city by bike. You can easily rent one or hire a guided tour.

Visit the city markets

Bogota has markets where you can buy typical street food, fruits, vegetables and even crafts. One option is the Paloquemao, a large indoor market in a neighborhood of the same name. There you will find a little bit of everything, from fruits and herbs to fresh fish.

Craft Market

Usaquén craft market is another excellent choice to visit. It is a street market and a fair that takes place every Sunday from 10am to 6pm in the Usaquén neighborhood. There, lots of vendors sell quality handicrafts so you might find a perfect and original souvenir.
